Jumping back into Bloggerland

Slowly, since my friend had a day of inspiration at the Urban Craft Uprising in Seattle a couple of weekends ago, I have been stumbling my way back to Bloggerland. I miss it! How could I have gone for so long without a post? What kind of lame blogger wannabe am i? Well, I am hoping I will be a bit more attentive in the future to my little crafty blog that I love so much...Only time will tell. A small start for today.

It's been awhile

School has started, HBO has great new programs on, and vacations have been gone on since I last posted. My hubs and I jaunted down to Austin City Limits and saw more music than a normal person should be able to physically see in a 3 day period. It was amazing.

My computer has been "breaking down" on me for almost 2 months now, but $400 and all that time later it appears now to be functioning. YAY! I will see if I can get any of my 3 loyal readers back from other fun internet competitors!

I am struggling with the challenge of learning how to tat with only print words, pictures from the internet, and kicking myself for not having foresight six years ago to tap the endless resource that was my great grandmother's knowledge of all crafts before she passed away. Sometimes I find myself looking at my blog thinking, "I have nothing more to say." I have been working on training the mutt. So far he knows how to sit, how to lay down, and how to not pee and poop in the house. I am amazed! Who gets a pound dog and gets that much?! Its awesome. I think we got him at just the perfect age, where he wasn't old enough yet to get a really bad life experience, and he is new enough to the world to learn all the wonderful treats it holds. We have a Specialist consultation regarding his eye on March 5th, where we will find out how much it will cost to surgically correct his "cherry eye." Life with Tucker, it fills a hole that has been in my heart since my other dogs left town.

If you have not been studying your presidential candidates, begin now, things are moving quickly, and it is time to start educating ourselves about them. Last night, on CNN (which I rarely sit and watch for more than 30 seconds) the democratic debate involving Clinton and Obama was shown. I feel pretty silly, but I got so excited at the idea of change, I watched the whole darn thing which didn't start until 12 and ended at 1:30, and was broadcast from the University of Texas in Austin. They talked about border control, and creating pathways to citizenship. They spoke of English as the dominant language and movement toward the requirement of every student to study at least a second language to keep us in touch, accessible, and open to the rest of the world. They spoke of creating tax breaks for seniors living off of their Social Security (and paying taxes on it), and average families struggling to make it in today's America by cutting their responsibility by $1000 per year, while at the same time cutting corporation tax breaks for those who send jobs overseas, and for those making a higher level of income.
I battled initially with my decision between these two candidates. I feel strongly about them as people. I see benefits for each of them as members of our government, and I think that they both may offer extreme benefits to our nation. However, tonight I have seen a Senator Obama that I believe will best serve our country in the coming election and the duration of his presidency.
Many of the fall backs Senator Clinton waged against Senator Obama was the "inaction" and the words he spins in speeches and books. "He has less experience in government." He is a Senator, as is she. Does she have more experience because she lived in the White House? I want to examine them. He retaliated with a comment that as Senator one of the actions that he was able to instill was a change in policy where Walter Reed Vets, who previously while in hospital receiving care had to pay for meals. Do they want Universal Health care? They both argue they do, however they have different plans in how to achieve this goal. From what I have gathered while typing Clinton would instill a tax like deduction from income where everyone pays into a pot like Medicare, FICA, or whatever those other big money suckers are. Obama's focus is more on lowering premiums and making it more affordable for everyone, especially parents.
Okay, I am falling asleep and the debate us over, but I wanted to warn everyone that the Democratic Candidate will be determined in Colorado in August.
Post-debate, the reports concur that Obama starts off behind and then blows by Clinton in the conclusion of the debates! Pretty awesome. Rock on Obama!

I can only say they were amazing. Rarely to I enjoy recipies with multiple parts, and a seemingly gazillion different ingredients, but occassionally its fun to take on the cool dinner project. So Dan and I made Fish Tacos from John Ash's book From the Earth to the Table. It was wonderful. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a good cooking project.

Effie and I used to work in a little cafe for most of our lives before families and babies and adulthood (is that where we are?). She made exquisite salads and if ever (more often than not) they involved peppers, her favorite thing was to pick out what could be described as the pepper genitalia, if peppers were to have genitalia. You know the part I'm talking about, the little baby pepper growth that is usually found once you slice a pepper in half. They are never the same shape, and Effie used to set them aside and love them while she finished up the salad she was working on. This picture Becky took reminded me of that and made me smile.

So, to answer some well founded questions that have arisen, yes, we got a dog. I took a trip down to Lane County Animal Rescue Agency last Thursday morning. I didn't have class that morning, and had a wild hair to go down there and just see who was there. You know, just to begin my search for a dog. Of course, as anyone who couldn't walk away empty handed after visiting the pound, and who has looked into the eyes of all of these wonderful 4 legged furry people needing homes knows, I found one I had to save. He was the first dog I took into the "cattery" with me. I couldn't shake him out of my head. So of course I called Dan, and he came down to meet him later on that day. We went home to think about it over night (he's really good at talking me into that type of thing), and ended up back the next morning to seal the deal. Of course it was a Friday, so we wouldn't be able to take him home until after the weekend, which was actually a blessing considering our home was less than dog-proof.
So we brought him home on Monday and aside from the standard day 2 diarrhea in the house (he'd been neutered under general anesthesia the day before), we've been good at taking him out regularly and have avoided any other accidents, which seem to make him happy, and us happy.
He is curious about the kitty, who is less than impressed that there is another 4 legger sharing her living room, but she seems to be slowly adapting to having safe havens in the bedrooms, the bathroom, and the garage. I feel confident that one day she will actually say hi to him, though it may be a while, years even, and until then they will be peaceful ships passing in the night. His name is Tucker. And I love him.

I received my letter today from Pacific University. The letter stated that I was thanked my for participation in the interview process, but that I had not been chosen for admittance to their program this year. So, I am spending tonight wallowing in sadness and rejection, and tomorrow I will wake up and go out to Lane and study organic chemistry, because my first test is coming up in O-chem, and studying must be done. I have to admit my bruised ego is standing in the way of thinking about anything else at this point in time, but that will soon change and back on the horse I will go. Its hard to look forward at another year as preparation, when I was so excited of jumping in, but that's where I am, and all I can do is prepare, apply, dedicate, and try again for next year. So thank you to everyone who listened to me and supported me, I am a wee down right now, but as you should know by now, I come back with a bang!

Just a shot of the boots that Jeopardy-Online-Test used to kick our butts. Dan and I worked together, as we only have one PC*, on the Jeopardy-Online-Test. Our lack of knowledge was so astounding that we couldn't help but feel pride at the extent to which we failed. To think, that we thought by simply watching the show, and sometimes even answer the majority of questions, that we could actually qualify or compete on a basic level was a lesson in humility. We couldn't even list the capital of West Virginia. We were convinced that our immediate answer was actually the capital of South Carolina....Which it was. They're the same. Imagine our frusteration. Not to say that by any means, was that the the make-or-break question that stood in the way of our success, but simply an illustration of the of self doubt and debate that occured during the slice of time (15 seconds) that was alloted for typing in the correct response. Needless to say, "pass" was entered automatically by the computer more times than not in our Jeopardy-Online-Test.

* As a side note: we could have registered to compete in different time zones, which would have fixed this problem, as the tests would have been performed on different nights. But as Jeopardy-Online-Test proved, we are not yet worthy.

Well snow has blanketed Eugene, and reminded everyone to stay in bed an extra day if possible. Of course, not everyone can take advantage of this wonderful gift of leisure time, Dan for instance, has to go out there, drive big trucks and reschedule jobs for today and tomorrow. Man not happy.

But lil' ole me, I get to sit here at my kitchen table, drink coffee, do chemistry, and when I am done I am going to crochet the afternoon away. Lucky happy me.

Well,

As some of you know, I had my interview today at Pacific University. I have to say that as an experience, regardless of outcome, I met some of the coolest people from all different medical backgrounds, from all over the states today. I spoke with students about how they managed being away from their families, how it is to be $100 k in debt, how they continue going on when they feel there is no way they are going to be able to retain the wealth of information they are expected to. Every student was enthusiastic about the program, passionate about communicating to us the willingness of the faculty to help students succeed.

I really enjoyed the experience. I have never interviewed for a graduate school before, especially since I don't have my Bachelor's degree. I think that I was the only one in today's group that didn't yet earn a bachelor's degree. I was one of two who showed up wearing an outfit that was not a suit. I was the only one who went to the wrong campus first, therefor showing up a mere 5 minutes prior to program start time.

Surprisingly, the admission invitations and denials will go out Monday or Tuesday, so we should be informed of our status by next week. How lucky are we? The earlier groups have been waiting for months! The agony!

Dan and I went up and stayed at the Grand Lodge, had dinner with a friend, and soaked in the pool before heading to bed last night. We are glad to be home, and I am thankful that this chapter is done, and I can get back to my full load of classes. I have neglected them over the past week because its been so hard to think about anything but this day. And now this day is over, and I have done the best I can.

1. The White Stripes interview on NPR that began and ended just as I left my house and arrived at work (yes, it takes me 7 minutes to get to work in the morning commute in Eugene, Oregon. It's great!).
2. Being the first to arrive of my crew at the office. There is just something nice about being alone there in the morning.
3. Drinking coffee and eating an apple fritter (I have developed a near-daily donut habit, its been about a week now, still going strong.) while logging on to my computer.
4. Reading emails that were advising me my pre-requisites for Organic Chemistry 2 would be waived and I would be free to register at LCC, and then five minutes later receiving one stating the same from the UO.
5. Hearing "thank-you-for-being-there-I-appreciate-the-time-and-effort-you-have-spent-helping-our-family-through-this" on the phone before 11 am.
6. Not hearing "your-office-is-so-disorganized-I-can't-express-how-frusterated-I-am-that-you-can't-help-me" once during the day.
7. An hour long nap at 3.
8. Dinner at Ambrosia's with Dan and Lisa (Dan's Aunt). Great food, good wine, fabulous conversation, and even better chocolate mousse to finish the event.
9. Coming home to Family Guy and The Office re-runs on Channel 55.
10. Realizing that tomorrow is my "Friday", I have Thursday off, and then Dan and I travel to Austin, Texas Thursday evening!

End of an Era

Well today I moved my stuff out of my own private office and back into the office staff cubicle quartet. It was sad, and fun, and honestly its not so bad losing an office. A bit harder to concentrate, but then what am I doing working at work anywah? Sheesh....

Dan and I are now in our final days of preparation for our first "goin' on a jet plane" trip together! On Thursday we leave for Austin, Texas and return the following Friday. We will be staying with his brother Gabe, and his girlfriend, Lucy. I think aside from golfing, shopping, sleeping in, and moz-ee-ing around, our plans are at a minimum, which sounds perfect.

We will be there over Christmas, and for Gabe's big 3-0 birthday, which as every child fears, falls on the day after Christmas. Such sadness for a little boy!

So we did Christmas today. From 10:30 until 10:30. Maybe I got a two hour nap in between events, but really, it was quite a day. We arrived at my Grandparents house this morning to a house smelling slow cooked turkey, dressing, potatoes, salad, the list goes on.... And immediately were greeted with hugs and the unavoidable presence of, well, ....presents. Lots of them.

My family on my Dad's side likes to do Christmas in a "go big or go home" type style. Inevitably, every year there will be an exorbitant amount of neatly wrapped packages with Sharpie pen scrawled across the top indicating the recipient. Many of the presence are shaped surprisingly similar, and slowly one (who may perhaps be new to this phenomenon) realizes that these similarly shaped gifts, are indeed the exact same thing for as many as four different people, seperated only by gender. We often see an influx of "As Seen On TV" labels across the top of the boxes, and sometimes are struck in awe by the fact that our particular gift is even produced, manufactured, sold, and finally, was bought, by someone with whom we share blood.

There are some constants that we can count on to receive every year: a journal of some sort, a weekly/monthly planner, and the LifeSaver book. Last year was the first year that the LifeSaver book was not around, and I was shocked that I was actually dissapointed when I packed up my loot and it was not there. The manufacturers had stopped making it, and my grandmother had not been prepared to supplement it with another, less worthy gift. This year she jumped back into the tradition and we left happily with LifeSaver Gummies, which are new, and who knows what experience they will bring. But atleast some consistency was back in the flow of things.

Its amazing to me that after years of attempting to scale down the sheer volume of gifts, how attached I have actually grown to the opening, the handing out of the gifts, and the final "Big Reveal", usually involving cards with $$ inside. It seems as though with the growing of our family, my father and I have both grown more accepting of the scale to which the Grandparents express their enjoyment of this Christmas gift exchange, and have found ourselves participating equally in the massive production.

Of course, even with the quantity being a force in itself to be wreckoned with, its never about the gifts. Its about the time, the shopping, the wrapping, the unwrapping, the looks, the final packing up, and the food. After trying for years to scale the gifts down to a couple a piece, we finally realized that, while none of it is necessary, nor of particularly elaborate quality most of the time, it is more about the time put in to make a production of opening, exchanging, oohing and aaahing, and that it is ultimately something that makes all of us, in an odd way, happy through the consistency of the tradition.

We ended up walking out the door with a number of wonderful things this year, some cash, some gift certificates, some material and sewing notions for me, and some sports paraphenalia for Dan. We also lucked out on some of our choices for the parents and grandparents, and felt quite proud of ourselves by the time it was all over.

We headed also over to my Mom's house where a much more low-key Christmas occurs, this involved a badly needed glass of wine, a mere handful of thoughtful-and-much-needed gifts, some food and lots of hugs. From there we headed to Dan's work party.

Dan's work's Holiday parties are always fun. The owner of the company and his wife always go out of there way to provide enough food and beverages for everyone, as well as think up several ways to keep the party flowing with games and prizes which everyone is eligible to win. Everyone starts by bringing a gift ( $10 limit, though of course if you're cool you go over a wee bit) which is neatly wrapped and unlabeled. From the moment you enter the door you are given a little pin with a Christmas light on it that signifies you have not yet been caught saying the "forbidden word." If you say the word and someone hears you they can take all of the pins you may have accumulated up to that point. In the end the person with the most pins wins a prize. This game goes on all night.

Once everyone had a arrived and poured a beverage or loaded up on snacks, we began the white elephant exchange. In this game, everyone draws a number, and then chooses a gift to open or chooses a gift someone before them has opened which they would like to have. A present can be exchanged a maximum of 3 times including the initial selection. From then on it cannot be stolen again and is considered "dead." Dan and I drew high numbers and were lucky to have our pick of either a surprise gift, or one we wanted to steal. We played seperately, and he chose a gift that had been stolen once before and was dead once it got to him. I opened a new one revealing a great frame. Why is Change so Scary?

Why is the thought of change, any change, such a frightening one? The thought of change, especially big change is one that evokes in me stomach churning nausea, which could be misinterpreted as the excited butterfly-feeling also, but I know better. What is it about big changes that we don't want to deal with? Is it the difficulty? The unfamiliarity? Is it a fear that we can't return to where we were? Perhaps it is the idea of the commitment to the change that is the source of apprehension. All I know is I have been presented a very unexpected opportunity, and I am terrified to seize it, and terrified to blow it simultaneously. I feel split in two and held together with inferior glue. Like I could just split in half at any given moment. I suppose it is a good thing that I simply don't have time for halving myself right now. This chance requires a drastic change in my school schedule, one that will require me to really manage my time and energy in the most efficient manner, and one that will require more time than I gave to school in this last year, while continuing to work. It is nerve wracking and has the potential to be hugely life changing for myself and my husband. Despite the fearful butterflies, I am trying my best to keep my head on straight, my eyes open to all the goals that need to be met to keep all the doors wide open for decision making a bit down the road.

Dan and I found ourselves immersed in a show about sustainable structure. Scrapile is a company that uses scraps from furniture manufacturers in Brooklyn, NY, and builds beautiful pieces that are similar in design to the style that Dan uses when he builds! It was so cool....Inspiring to see how they do it on a larger scale. Another clip showed Herman-Miller, a company dedicated to green practices and sustainability. I don't know much about them but I want to know more.

Frusteration

I have spent hours, days, weeks, on figuring out how to get this site up and running. I am so close to throwing my hands in the air and screaming "I am incapable!" How can so many step-by-step, simple instructions followed to the last character not bring about the desired result? I have been working to get a custom domain and have blogger still because I love blogger. But I am losing the battle of mastering the custom domain. I can barely log on to it. And once I am in, I can't seem to find a single place that indicates I can begin doing anything on it without purchasing twelve more items first. I am needing help. Big time.
